Profile
I have over 35 years’ nursing experience and predominantly specialise in Oncology, including Acute Medical Oncology, Clinical Oncology(radiotherapy), chemotherapy/immunotherapy, CVAD management, breaking bad news, palliation, and bereavement support.
In2004 I qualified in the administration of SACT drugs and gained significant experience in this skill, working in a specialist Cancer Treatment Centre. I now have extensive knowledge of cytotoxic and immunotherapy agents, their side effects and clinical management. I am experienced in peripheral and central venous access and the management of extravasations. My experience also extends to administering unlicensed drugs to patients in Phase l, ll & lll clinical trials and liaising with external stakeholders worldwide.
I have extensive knowledge and clinical experience in several tumour types, including sarcomas, cancers of unknown primary, metastatic disease, MSCC, and cancers presenting at an advanced stage. I am experienced in managing acutely unwell cancer patients and those presenting with oncological emergencies, such as Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression (MSCC)and Cauda Equina. On this, I provide guidance and instruction on the implementation of local and national guidelines, to ensure emergency oncological treatment is carried out within the required timeframes.
I am an expert in delivering pre-treatment consultations and advising newly diagnosed patients on the grade & staging of their cancer and eligible treatment options. I can confidently deliver clinical presentations at MDM's and act as the patient advocate during the clinical decision-making process, including ‘best interests’ meetings. My experience of the wider oncology community aids me in working collaboratively to support patients.
I have worked as a Lead Nurse for SACT, in a large London Teaching hospital and carried out several specialist roles, across a number of tumour sites. I currently work as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Urological cancers in a large NHS Teaching Trust.
I have excellent working knowledge of the NHS and an understanding of how to circumnavigate potential treatment complications and delays. I have a good understanding of the private sector and services available, having cared for both NHS & Private Patients. I am proficient at recognising and supporting patients who have reached the end of their treatment options and commenced end of life care, giving me experience in palliation, RESPECT and bereavement support.
During the pandemic I created an entire temporary palliative care service at a tertiary orthopaedic hospital on the outskirts of London, including the establishment of a temporary mortuary, airlifted on site, in less than two weeks.
I consistently demonstrate professional, credible, and impactful communication skills, that offer expert, evidence-based knowledge and experience, that are both concise and unambiguous. I handle challenging situations with great tenacity and confidence and have a strong understanding of Good Clinical Practice, NICE Guidelines and NMC Code of Conduct.
I have undergone training in the role of the expert witness and understand my duties under the Civil Procedure Rules pertaining to Expert Witnesses and Part 35.
