Profile

I have 12 years’ experience working as a senior critical care nurse in cardiothoracic ICU. My main clinical background is cardiology and cardiac surgery, and I have a keen interest in education in clinical practice with registered and pre-registration personnel. I’m also a mentor for ‘Beyond Barriers’ for higher education students at Kingston University, it aims to help under- represented students in their personal and professional development. Depending on shift availability, I also work with ACCESS (Adult Critical Care Emergency Support Services) and in essence, it’s transfer and retrieval service for critical care patients to facilitate capacity, escalation and repatriation. This is a joint effort between the London Ambulance services and experienced Critical Care healthcare workers.

I have undergone training in the role of the expert witness and understand my duties under the Civil Procedure Rules pertaining to Expert Witnesses and Part 35.

Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Sister/Team Leader (2023 to current date)

St Georges Hospital (Blackshaw Rd, London, SW17 0QT)

As a Team Leader in ICU my job is to be responsible for the operational management of ICU, to be a role model for the team in terms of clinical, general management, quality standards and be the professional team leader.

Cardiothoracic Intensive Care- Senior Staff Nurse (2012 – 2023)

St George’s Hospital  (Blackshaw Rd, London, SW17 0QT)

As an intensive care nurse, my duties are to be able to care for a variety of critically ill patients (Level 2 or 3) and provide excellent care. The unit admits patients that have had cardiac, thoracic or vascular surgery and also patients who have suffered out of hospital cardiac arrest and complicated MI's. At the bedspace I  am able to manage complex machinery such as a ventilator, haemofiltration machine, intra-aortic balloon pump, pulmonary artery catheter, oscillator and LiDCO. It is essential to understand how each piece of equipment works and the way they contribute to patient treatment in order to maintain safety but moreover, to plan and implement care according to what the patient needs and requires. My duties are not only towards the patient but also to my colleagues as I am able to work well within a large team, support junior staff members and mentor student staff who have joined the team and facilitate their start in critical care. I’d like to add that I have previous experience of practice support during my time in critical care and I am capable, knowledgeable and confident with bedside teaching, familiar with the expected competencies and willing to participate in any teaching that should occur outside the clinical environment (i.e. inductions, FCCN, specific study days).

Skills:

Using ventilators and different modes (NIV including)

Haemofilters/ renal haemodialysis due to lack of RRT machines during the covid pandemic, the ICU had to become resourceful and therefore a number of ICU nurses had the opportunity to learn and manage HD. This was a MDT effort, by the nursing and medical team from ICU and renal departments.
