Profile
I am presently a clinical nurse with over 28 years' experience specialising in sexual health & contraception outreach, working with hard-to-reach communities as well as in a clinic setting. These clinics include nurse led clinics and young people’s clinics.
I started my career in the acute setting: infectious diseases, immunology and palliative oncology, later becoming a community specialist public health nurse and community clinical nurse/ health visitor specialist in HIV for many years.
Since then, I have worked in roles such as Community Adult Safeguarding Lead and as Primary Care Workforce Tutor for a clinical commissioning group and have a sound understanding of the importance of integrated healthcare provision.
In addition to these roles, I have worked as a senior lecturer within the university setting, as module leader for apprentices undertaking advanced clinical practice and HIV module leader. Her teaching experience includes sexual health & contraception, law and ethics, health improvement and public health.
I have worked within the field of sexual health and contraception since 2008 and maintain my clinical skills as well as being on the sexual health and contraception safeguarding team.
Within my role as clinical nurse specialist for sexual health & contraception outreach, I have experience of working with hard-to-reach communities, providing a high-quality care pathway for patients. The role requires assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care whilst providing education, liaison and referral to/with other agencies. I regularly attend safeguarding strategy meetings, submit police reports, and represent my service meetings, including child exploitation panels.
I have extensive experience of planning, coordinating and evaluating a complex range of care interventions for individuals, as well service improvement/community development projects to meet the needs of the local population.
As a sexual health and contraception specialist nurse, my role is to promote independence and empower people to manage their sexual health and contraception needs whilst assessing risk, creating the safest possible environment by adhering to robust risk assessment, standard operational procedures and national guidelines.
