Profile
I have over 35 years’ experience working in neurology and neurorehabilitation settings, as an occupational therapist. For the past 16 years I have worked as a clinical case manager specialising in working with both adults and children with catastrophic or life altering injuries. This has included recruiting to and managing 24/7 care packages as well as working with people with brain injuries who have no visible effects of the injury but who have needed the establishment of robust support structures to ensure their best chance of returning to the life and activities they had before any injury.
My career to date has include senior positions in the private healthcare system in England. As one of the first therapy services managers in the private sector, I was part of the inaugural team who designed and commissioned the acute neurological rehabilitation unit at the Wellington Hospital in London. I have always retained a clinical “hands on” component to my work, both as an occupational therapist and as a case manager. I believe without “doing the doing” of treatment and intervention you cannot comment on what might or might not work for people when providing an expert opinion.
During my career I have developed expertise in the assessment, treatment and management of people with acquired brain injury, spinal injuries, amputations and complex orthopaedic injuries. I also have extensive experience of working with people with psychological issues including post-traumatic stress disorder.
I am currently working as an independent consultant occupational therapist, primarily with adults with brain injury or neuro diverse diagnoses. I provide consultancy services across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
I provide supervision for students and fellow occupational therapy and case manager colleagues.
I am a former chairperson of the British Association of Occupational Therapists in Northern Ireland
I established the All-Ireland Case Management Network to provide a platform for case managers to have clinical supervision, support for new case managers and as a resource for families and legal professionals requiring the services of a case manager in Ireland.
I am a director of Coed Tir George a CIC set up for families who have been bereaved through the death of a child.
