Profile
I am a highly specialist Advanced Practitioner Physiotherapist with over 20 years’ experience as a physiotherapist and 17 years’ experience working in cancer care. I am registered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and with the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Oncology and Palliative Care (ACPOPC).
I have extensive experience working in the NHS within oncology, haematology and palliative care, primarily in the acute hospital setting but also outpatient and community settings.
I have advanced expertise in managing complex cancer presentations including metastatic disease, pathological fractures, metastatic spinal cord compression; complications from the disease itself such as brain tumours, spinal tumours and head and neck cancers and treatment related complications such as cancer related fatigue, chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy, lymphoedema, steroid induced myopathy, immunotherapy toxicities and palliative care rehabilitation.
I provide comprehensive, holistic assessments for people with often very complex needs both physically and emotionally and derive rehabilitation and management plans based on need, wishes, and goals with the aim to improve quality of life, functional independence, and long term survivorship outcomes.
I work collaboratively as part of a multi discipline team and provide expert advice to professionals within this including spinal surgeons, oncologists, haematologists, CNS teams, radiographers, palliative care professionals and occupational therapists.
I lead the physiotherapy team within cancer services in my area (Southwest Wales). I have a proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary rehabilitation pathways, implement evidence-based practice and deliver patient centred care in line with National standards.
I have a special interest in metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) and am a national expert in the assessment, management and rehabilitation of people with this diagnosis. I provide teaching and present at conference at a national level in this area and was recently a committee member on the NICE panel and co-authored the NICE guidelines in 2023 for the management of spinal metastases and metastatic spinal cord compression.
Over the past six years I have also provided specialist physiotherapy advice and reports for the ombudsman health complaints.
My additional roles include:
· Deputy Clinical Lead of All Wales Acute Oncology Services Group
· Therapy Lead of All Wales MUO/CUP Cancer Site Group
· Co-Chair of National MSCC Peer support group
My Specialist Skills include:
